Classical Pilates is a method of total body conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. It focuses on developing strength in your “core” muscles, meaning the muscles of your abdomen, back and buttocks. Your core acts as the “powerhouse” of your body, through Pilates you will learn to connect your powerhouse to the weaker areas of your body allowing you to move more safely and effectively. By combining stretching and strengthening in each exercise you will reduce your risk of injury, mobilize your spine, increase your flexibility and create long, lean muscles.
The focus and concentration needed to perform each exercise educates you to become more aware of your body. Pilates is meant to undo many of the bad habits and stresses we put on our bodies each day. Strengthening the core and aligning the body can alleviate pain and help protect internal organs. With a strong powerhouse your spine is supported thus making it easier and more natural to stand erect.
Private and semi-private yoga classes are also offered and are taught with a Pilates mindset. Focus is on proper form and alignment and use of core muscles to support poses and well as breath work and balancing poses to reduce stress and strengthen the stabilizer muscles that support your joints.
